Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

The symptoms of OCD include the presence of recurrent, persistent and unwanted thoughts, impulses or images (obsessions) and/or the performance of repetitive, often seemingly purposeful, ritualistic behaviors (compulsions). Symptoms include:

  • Washing: Obsessed with contamination, dirt, germs or bugs, patients may spend several hours each day washing and cleaning.
  • Checking: Individuals worried about harming themselves or others repeatedly check to make sure appliances such as stoves and irons are turned off or doors are locked.
  • Repeating: Some people with OCD attempt to ease anxiety by repeating a number or counting sequence, prayer or phrase over and over.
  • Hoarding: The need to save useless items such as old newspapers sometimes renders living quarters uninhabitable.
