Types of Treatment The Ross Center offers ongoing therapy sessions as well as a short term Intensive Treatment Program for individuals from out of state. The Ross Center specializes in cognitive and behavioral therapies, psychological treatments that are of demonstrated effectiveness for anxiety disorders. Cognitive therapy works by helping individuals identify and alter the way they view themselves, their fears and their worries. It aims to change people's negative thought patterns by teaching them to analyze their feelings and separate realistic from unrealistic thoughts. Behavior therapy, which includes breathing retraining, relaxation techniques and exposure therapy helps individuals modify and gain control over unwanted behavior. In treating anxiety disorders, cognitive and behavioral therapies are combined to achieve maximum therapeutic benefits. The Ross Center is unique in that most of the cognitive/behavioral therapy sessions take place in "real-life" or simulated anxiety producing situations. Patients are taught anxiety reduction skills while gradually being exposed to objects, places or situations that they have been avoiding or enduring with discomfort. A typical therapy session may take place in a car, a shopping mall, a restaurant or even a patient's home. Medication prescribing and management is also available at The Ross Center and can play a useful role in treating anxiety disorders. Medication is most effective when used in conjunction with cognitive and behavioral therapies. Treatment may include individual, group or combination therapies, depending upon the specific needs of each patient. Therapy sessions are flexible, ranging from weekly, twice-weekly or bi-weekly sessions to an accelerated Intensive Treatment Program for individuals from out-of-state. |
