These effects are typically temporary and tend to resolve quicklyoften immediately or within a few days after treatment - Are you seeing people virtually or in the office, or both? > We are currently seeing patients both in-person and via teletherapy. Of course, we are carefully monitoring recommendations from the CDC and local departments of health, and will continue to revise our plans if necessary. Teletherapy will continue to be an option for both current and new patients, as we segue into a hybrid model of care. - At what age can my child get tested? > Sadie Shin, PhD (New York office) tests as low as three year olds and has advanced training as a neuropsychologist. - Can divorced or separated parents attend together? > Yes, if both agree. Shared strategies support consistency across households and better outcomes for the child. - Can I attend a group if I’m already in individual therapy elsewhere? > Yes. With your permission, Ross Center clinicians can coordinate with your outside therapist to keep goals aligned. - Can I attend a group if I’m already in individual therapy elsewhere? > Yes. With your permission, Ross Center clinicians can coordinate with your outside therapist to keep goals aligned. - Can I just come for a few sessions or join late? > No. All group members must commit to the full length of the group, and pay in full for the entire group course. If someone knows in advance theyll have to miss more than one session, they will be asked to defer to a future group rather than sign up now. This is so that all individuals get the full benefit of the group, and that group cohesion is formed among all participants. Participants are signing up to work on their anxiety with other peopleif those people arent there, the group fails! - Can I use my insurance to pay for REACH Therapy? > The Ross Center is an out of network provider, and does not accept insurance. However, many clients are able to submit receipts for out of network services to their insurance company for reimbursement. - Can I use my insurance to pay for SSC? > In a Single Session Consultation, you are not given a diagnosis, but rather we work together on a specific issue. Therefore, many insurance carriers will not cover sessions without a diagnosis code. Often, people are able to use their HSA (Health Savings Account) benefits to pay for SSC. Although we do not bill insurance carriers directly, we can provide you with the receipts necessary if you choose to submit to your insurance. You can refer to SheerHealth.com for help in determining your out-of-network benefits. Learn more HERE on how to submit claims for out-of-network benefits to your insurance company. - Can I use my insurance to pay for the One-Day TMS treatment? > Currently, only the traditional TMS protocol is covered by insurance. The One-Day (ONE-D) accelerated TMS treatment is self-pay but is significantly more affordable than SAINT (Stanford Accelerated Intelligent Neuromodulation Therapy), which is also not covered by insurance. - Can I use Single Session Consultation sessions for urgent concerns or if I am in crisis? > Yes SSC can be used for non life-threatening concerns. Should more intensive services be needed, the SSC clinician can help create a plan to seek those services. - Can my doctor just order refills, or do I need to come every month? > Typically, you will receive refills at each visit to ensure that you will have medication to last until your next appointment. The frequency of appointments varies depending on a variety of factors, all of which you can discuss with your doctor. We make every effort to accommodate your schedule regarding frequency of visits, and are happy to discuss our recommendations and work together to find a frequency that meets your needs. - Do I have to take medication if I see a psychiatrist? > Often people will have a consultation with a psychiatrist to educate themselves about medication as one potential tool for treatment, but it is one of many options. - Do I need a mental health diagnosis to schedule a SSC? > No, you do not need a diagnosis. - Do I need to be a patient at the Ross Center to participate in a group? > No, all Ross Center groups are open to everyone. However, outside patients will need to complete a group intake to assess if they are an appropriate fit for the group. (Current Ross Center patients can talk to their provider to see if the groups are a good fit). - Do you accept insurance? > Like many mental health practices in our area, we are out-of-network and do not participate in any insurance plans. However, many of our patients are able to get some level of reimbursement from their insurance carrier for out-of-network benefits. Although we do not bill insurance carriers directly, we can provide you with the receipts necessary if you choose to submit to your insurance. You may want to contact your insurance company to verify your mental health benefits prior to engaging in treatment. Patients often use their Health Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) to set aside pre-tax dollars to pay for mental health not covered by insurance. To learn how to request reimbursement and submit claims for out-of-network benefits to your insurance company CLICK HERE. Insurance companies put many constraints on mental health providers that limit our ability to offer the highest quality care to our patients. Insurers require specific diagnoses codes for each session, and put strict controls on the length and quantity of sessions based on financial algorithms rather than quality of care. In addition, there are confidentiality issues with employers when providers are required to provide diagnosis and treatment notes to insurance companies, with potential implications for pre-existing condition restrictions. Our goal is to provide you with the optimal mental health treatment tailored specifically to your needs, and not be held to guidelines established by insurers. - Do you include parents and family members in treatment? > For children under 18 , parents are always included in the intake process and often included in the treatment as well. This will depend on the childs age and needs. For young adults, parents and other family members can be included depending on what feels comfortable and medically necessary for the patient and the clinician. It is often helpful to have close friends or family members involved somewhat in the evaluation and/or treatment process. This depends on the individual circumstances. We can also work with parents independently to discuss issues and concerns with their child. - Do you use one approach or a mix? > Clinicians start with evidence-based models such as CBT, DBT, or ACT and may integrate other modalities as needed. Youll learn why each technique is chosen and how it targets your concerns. - Does the REACH program offer group therapy? > Yes, REACH Groups will be formed when there is sufficient interest among participants registered for REACH Individual Therapy. For a group to form, there needs to be at least 5 REACH participants interested. Participants can join as many group cycles as they would like. - How big are the groups? > Most run with 610 participants to ensure enough interaction without feeling overwhelming. - How big are the groups? > Most run with 610 participants to ensure enough interaction without feeling overwhelming. - How do I choose which clinician to see? > We can help make that decision for you. When you first call our office, one of our trained patient care coordinators will speak with you about your concerns, and direct you to the specialized clinician who we think will be the best fit for your situation. We take into consideration your symptoms, age (or the age of your child), and potential need for medication before matching you with the most appropriate clinician either a therapist or a psychiatrist (MD). You can see a description of all of our clinicians HERE. We want to make sure that the Ross Center is the best place for your care, and that you are matched with the clinician most appropriate for your concerns. If, after the initial intake appointment, the clinician determines that a different professional in our office would be a better match, we will make that recommendation. Ultimately our goal is to help you get better as quickly as possible. - How do I request a refill for a prescription? > Prescription refills can be requested using the form below. Keep in mind that prescription refills will be taken care of within 48 business hours of the request, Monday through Friday from 9AM to 5PM. This means anything received on Friday will be completed no later than the same time the following Tuesday (assuming that Monday is not a holiday). If you need a refill more quickly, please call the office as soon as possible and do not use this form. If you have an urgent prescription issue, please contact your doctor and follow the instruction in their outgoing voicemail message. PHONE: 202-363-1010 and press 0.EMAIL: REACH@rosscenter.com - How does the doctor decide which medication to prescribe? > During the initial consultation, your psychiatrist will review your medical and personal history, examining records and discussing any treatments that may have been provided to you in the past. If medication is indicated, your doctor will explain what medications are available to treat your symptoms, and discuss the risks, benefits, and potential side effects of medications. Together you will make a decision about which medication to begin, if any. Our goal is to deliver a comprehensive treatment plan within 1-2 sessions, although some cases will need a 3rd session to finalize those decisions. This may mean a medication is prescribed as part of that plan, or that it is discussed as an option to pursue at a later date. - How is One-Day TMS different from SAINT (Stanford Accelerated Intelligent Neuromodulation Therapy)? > Both One-Day TMS and SAINT use intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) and have demonstrated high rates of improvement and remission. The main difference is the treatment schedule: One-Day TMS condenses 20 sessions into a single day, uses standard targeting (no MRI required), and involves fewer total pulses. SAINT delivers 10 sessions per day over five days and requires MRI-based targeting. - How long does the process take? > From initial call to final written report typically spans 6-8 weeks, though timelines vary with test complexity and scheduling. - How long will therapy last? > Most clients attend weekly 45-minute sessions for 820 weeks, but length varies with symptom severity, life circumstances, and personal goals. Youre encouraged to ask about progress markers after the first four sessions. - How many sessions are typical? > Many families gain meaningful strategies in 36 sessions, though complex cases may benefit from longer support. - How often are follow-up visits? > This varies depending on the presenting symptoms and medications chosen, but typically follow up is scheduled a few weeks after the first - How often do I have to see the psychiatrist, especially if I already see a therapist regularly? > Our psychiatrists know and understand the value of therapy, and our therapists know and understand the value of medications. However, therapists without medical training are not trained in the use of medications and as such are unable to provide the necessary monitoring that the medications need to be used safely and effectively. Therefore it is important to continue to see a psychiatrist to ensure that medications are working effectively. - How often do I need follow-up appointments if I am taking medication? > All patients will need to be seen in regular follow up visits, in order for medication benefits to be assessed, side effects discussed and managed, and any other issues handled. The frequency of the visits depends on many different clinical issues, and you can discuss with your doctor what they think is likely to be needed for your specific care plan. - How often do you prescribe medication? > Our goal is to offer you the best, evidence-based treatment options. We provide education during our evaluation process about what treatments are available for different conditions. This can involve medication but certainly does not have to in most instances. Seeing a psychiatrist does not mean medication is recommended or prescribed; often our psychiatrists will recommend other treatments as a start and then evaluate the need for medication after a period of time. - How quickly can I get an appointment scheduled? > We try to schedule consultations within 2 business days of your request. - How will individual sessions be structured? > In the REACH program for INDIVIDUALS, you will participate in 6-12 individual therapy sessions designed to build skills in coping with racism-related stress. Sessions will be customized to your specific needs and goals. This program is not appropriate for individuals who are struggling with a complex mental health diagnosis. - If your child therapists are full, should I put my name on a waitlist? > Yes, we encourage parents to add their names to the waitlist. We maintain an active waitlist and contact potential patients as soon as therapists have availability based on the date you are added to the list. In the meantime, we encourage you to sign up for our newsletter to be notified of upcoming parenting programs, and to view the events section of our newsletter to access recorded webinars geared to parents. We can provide you with referrals to other child therapists in the area, but unfortunately the pandemic has heightened the demand for care across the board and many of our colleagues have waiting lists as well. If you or your child is in crisis, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. - Is everything I share confidential? > Yes. Information stays between you and your clinician unless you provide written consent or theres a legal duty to protect you or someone else from harm. - Is it ok if I also have another diagnosis? > Most people in Ross Center groups have other diagnoses in addition to the one the group is intended to address. For instance, someone with social anxiety disorder may also experience depression or ADHD. The initial intake will help sort out if other mental health concerns might interfere with group treatment. All of our groups are structured and focused on clear goals. Most participants also have an individual therapist to address other issues that might arise (although this is not necessarily a requirement). - Is it ok if I'm taking — or not taking — medication? > Approximately half of patients seeking group therapy are taking medication. That is an individual choice left up to you and your provider. For some, being on medication may reduce anxiety enough to be able to show up and participate in group. For others, gradually tapering off medication may make sense in order to feel anxious and learn how to tolerate the anxiety while doing exposure work. - Is medication always paired with therapy? > Research shows combined treatment often yields the best outcomes, but some clients succeed with medication-only or therapy-only plans. Your psychiatrist will explain pros and cons of each pathway. - Is the One-Day TMS treatment FDA approved? > Accelerated TMS protocols like ONE-D are not yet FDA approved, though they have been thoroughly researched and shown to be safe and effective in multiple studies. They are considered off-label treatments. The standard single-session iTBS (intermittent theta-burst stimulation) protocol is FDA approved, but the condensed one-day format of 20 sessions has not yet received FDA approval. - What are "behavioral exposures"? > Behavior is DOING. To reduce anxiety, exposing yourself to the very thing you fear, i.e. doing what youre scared to do, is essential. Like a slingshot, you need to pull back (feel more anxious) to propel forward (feel less anxious). This might mean flying on a plane if you fear flying, or it might mean talking to a stranger if you have social anxiety. - What are your fees? > Fees are based on your clinicians credentials and level of training. Youll find that our fees are consistent with other high quality competitors in our area. Please call the office where you would like to schedule an appointment for specific information about fees and scheduling. Additionally, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate explaining how much your medical care will cost. Under the No Surprises Act law, health care providers need to give patients who dont have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. This includes related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees. Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 1-800-985-3059. - What can I expect at my first appointment? > Your first appointment typically lasts for an hour. During this initial intake session, your clinician will provide a thorough assessment of your mental health and discuss goals and expectations for treatment. All of our clinicians are exceptional at evaluation and diagnosis, and we work collaboratively with your needs and wants to reach agreed upon treatment goals using a variety of therapeutic methods. - What does testing involve? > Testing involves a combination of interviews, cognitive and academic measures, behavior checklists, and review of other collateral information. Once testing is complete a feedback session is scheduled to share the full report and actionable recommendations. - What happens in a medication evaluation? > A psychiatrist reviews symptoms, medical history, current medications, and life stressors, then discusses potential benefits, side effects, and alternatives before prescribing. - What if I am already a patient at The Ross Center, and I have a diagnosis? > At times, a Single Session Consultation may be used within the context of the treatment plan for current Ross Center patients. In this case, a diagnosis code would allow for the session to be billed like a regular therapy session in which case the insurer would treat it the same as other therapy sessions submitted. - What if I can’t afford to pay for individual therapy? > If you are in need of financial assistance to participate in the REACH program, please let us know. Discounts are available for those in need. Inquiries about financial assistance or questions about insurance should be sent to dcinfo@rosscenter.com. - What if I have a problem to address in the group that no one else shares? > The benefit of small groups (5-8 people, usually closer to 5) is that there is room to address everyones concerns. But more often than not, someone else in group shares the same concern. While not support groups, the Ross Center groups foster a very supportive atmosphere where group members work to help one another by drawing on their own personal experience to share with others. - What if I need therapy AND medication? > If you need both therapy and medication, and you are certain of this prior to coming to us, we encourage you to schedule your initial appointment with one of our psychiatrists. Your psychiatrist will complete a full evaluation and make a recommendation both for medication and for a specific therapist whom they think would be a good fit for you. All of our professionals work closely together as a team, regularly communicating about your care and treatment plans. Patients find it very valuable to have their therapist and psychiatrist in the same office; not only is it more convenient but outcomes are often improved and progress achieved more quickly. - What if I want or need more than one Single Session Consultation session? > You can attend multiple single session consultations, however if it seems like SSC is being used as weekly therapy, your clinician may recommend more traditional therapy services. - What is parent consultation? > During a parent consultation, the clinician meets with caregivers to assess the issues needing to be treated, and to create behavior plans for implementation in the home or school. Parents are typically seen without the child present, and follow up sessions assess how well the plan has been implemented and trouble shoots issues that come up. - What is the Evidence that a Single Session Works? > In multiple real-world trials, the SSC has prevented (and reduced!) mental health problems in teens and adults waiting for longer-term treatment and seeking drop-in clinical serviceswhile strengthening their sense of hope and boosting their motivation for change. There have been 415 randomized clinical trials that collected data on SSC's, with 20 out of 24 reviews indicating that the intervention resulted in a benefit. Learn more: - What problems can individual therapy address? > A therapist can help with anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma, life transitions, relationship strain, and general stress management. Treatment goals are set collaboratively and revisited throughout care. - What skills can I hope to learn? > Here are some of the core skills youll work on in group: Mindfulnesshow to stay present in the moment on purpose without judgment Identifying, challenging, and replacing negative automatic thoughts Thought watchingnoticing thoughts without engaging them Appropriate assertivenessasking for what you need in a respectful but firm manner Relaxationhow to calm your nervous system Social skillsappropriate ways to engage socially with others - What sort of expertise do the group leaders have? > Ross Center group leaders are typically licensed clinical psychologists with extensive experience working one-on-one and in group settings using cognitive behavioral therapy to address anxiety disorders. They are considered experts in their field and employ evidenced-based strategies supported by social science research. - What's the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist? > A psychiatrist is a doctor who has completed medical school, with a minimum of 8 years of training that often includes clinical experiences in Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Primary Care, and Pediatrics (for child psychiatrists). As physicians, psychiatrists can prescribe medication while therapists, social workers, and psychologists cannot. All of our psychiatrists are also trained in various modalities of psychotherapy, and medication management sessions will often include a therapeutic component. Additionally, psychiatrists can recommend a very specific modality of therapy based on the patients evaluation and diagnosis. - What’s the advantage of a group over individual therapy? > Groups provide real-time practice, peer support, and lower cost per session while still teaching evidence-based skills. - What’s the advantage of a group over individual therapy? > Groups provide real-time practice, peer support, and lower cost per session while still teaching evidence-based skills. - When should I consider an evaluation for my child or myself? > If you notice persistent learning, attention, or mood challenges despite classroom or workplace supports, a standardized assessment can clarify diagnoses and guide next steps.Your therapist or your childs therapist may suggest testing as well to clarify learning and executive function challenges as well as for diagnostic clarity. - Who created the Single Session Consultation approach? > This research-based model is based on solution-focused therapy, and was created by Jessica Schleider, PhD, psychologist and director of the Lab for Scalable Mental Health at Northwestern University, and her team. They developed a structured program that intentionally involves one single visit intended to significantly improve mental health outcomes in both youth and adults. Learn more here: Single-Session Interventions Significantly Reduce Mental Health Issues for Youth and Adults - Why should I schedule a Single Session Consultation rather than ongoing therapy? > Most people who seek mental health care either receive no care or only one session. Having a full hour to address a problem is better than not getting help at all. Being placed on a waitlist can lead to worsening symptoms and frustration. SSC provides immediate support instead of waiting. SSC can also serve as a bridge to longer-term therapy or be a helpful supplement to care youre already receiving. - Will I be able to talk to group members outside of group? > Yes! Unlike traditional therapy groups where members are instructed not to communicate with one another, in the Ross Center groups, members are encouraged to interact outside of group to practice exposures (eg, with social anxiety, how to initiate and plan a social outing; with fear of flying, taking a field trip to a local airport). During the initial group session, parameters for interaction will be discussed with an emphasis on confidentiality. - Will I be forced to do "behavioral exposures"? > No one is ever forced to do anything in group! How much and when you do things is up to youalthough you will be guided and encouraged. Exposure work is a core feature of the RC groups, but much of it is done as homework on your own timetable. If you feel anxious about exposures, thats to be expected! If you didnt feel anxious, this would be the wrong group for you. We take small steps to get started, and always ask, Would you be willing to try?. The more youre willing, the more progress you make in addressing your anxiety. - Will I get addicted to the medication? > Certain medications do carry a risk for dependency and addiction. We make every effort to use these rarely, prescribing them carefully and thoughtfully to ensure risks are minimized. However, at times these medications are clinically very appropriate, and we have monitoring protocols in place in order to ensure you can use these medications judiciously and safely. - Will I have to share personal details? > You control what you disclose. Early sessions focus on learning skills; deeper sharing is always voluntary. - Will I have to share personal details? > You control what you disclose. Early sessions focus on learning skills; deeper sharing is always voluntary. - Will I walk away with a diagnosis for my mental health?  > No, consultations are intended to address a single concern, and the meeting does not include an evaluation or a diagnosis. - Will insurance pay for group therapy? > While we dont accept insurance at the Ross Center, we will provide you with a receipt after each session with codes that insurance companies recognize. You would be responsible for submitting those receipts for reimbursement. While every plan is different, some reimburse group therapy generouslywe encourage you to call your company to inquire. - Will my child still need therapy? > Sometimes parent work alone resolves issues; other times a combined child-plus-parent approach offers the best results. Your clinician will guide you. - Will the medications control me or change who I am? > Most people who have a treatment response to medication will often say that they are feeling MORE like themselves again vs. feeling their personality has changed. Medications typically reduce symptoms of mood and anxiety disorders, or improve symptoms of things like ADHD. They do not change who you are, or your values and belief systems, but rather alleviate symptoms so that you can live the life you deserve to live - Will the report qualify my child for school accommodations? > Accomodations do sometimes arise out of a psychological assessment, but it depends on the assessments provided and the presenting concerns. - Will there be homework? > YES! Most Ross Center groups include a workbook with the expectation that participants will read a chapter per week and complete short worksheets, as well as anxiety and behavioral logs. As the groups progress, the homework shifts to designing your own behavioral exposures (with the help of the group leader) to do between group sessions. The more you put in, the more you get out. - Will this group be sufficient to "cure" my anxiety? > That depends on the severity of anxiety, and the level of interference its causing in daily living, as well as how motivated you are to change, how engaged your are in the group, and most importantly, how much homework you do between group meetings. With fear of flying, taking just one flightwith a new lens, fresh information, mindfulness tools, and a willingness to accept discomfortwill be sufficient to continue flying. With social anxiety, group typically serves as a jumping off point, increasing social skills and social engagement. --- ## Workshops & Events * [Gottman Workshop: The 7 Principles for Making Marriage Work](https://www.rosscenter.com/events/gottman-couples-workshop/) > **Workshop Description:** * [Managing Big Feelings: Helping PreTeens to Regulate Emotions](https://www.rosscenter.com/events/managing-big-feelings-preteens/) > **Workshop Description:** * [SPACE Training: A 7-Week Group for Parents of Anxious Children](https://www.rosscenter.com/events/space-training-a-7-week-group-for-parents-of-anxious-children/) > **Workshop Description:** * [PEACE Group (Parent Emotions and Child Emotions): Teaching Preteens and Parents Skills to Manage Strong Emotions](https://www.rosscenter.com/events/peace-group-for-parents-and-preteens/) > **Workshop Description:** * [RO DBT Skills Class for Adults](https://www.rosscenter.com/events/ro-dbt-skills-class-for-adults/) > **Workshop Description:** * [Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Program for Adolescents and Teens](https://www.rosscenter.com/events/dbt-program-for-adolescents-and-teens/) > **Workshop Description:** * [How to Support Your Struggling Young Adult Child](https://www.rosscenter.com/events/how-to-support-your-struggling-young-adult-child/) > **Workshop Description:** * [Why Can’t I Just Get Started? If your child is on the autism spectrum, it may also bring up some worry for both of you. A new house comes with new rules and new routines, and your child may not have the familiar support they rely on at home. With some preparation, though, a visit to a friends house may become a good opportunity for your child to practice friendship skills. These playdate tips for kids with autism may help your child feel ready, and they may help the visit go well for everyone. Why visiting a friends house may feel harder for a child with autism Many children on the autism spectrum feel most comfortable when they know what to expect. At home, your child knows the routines and where everything is. At a friends house, almost everything is new, from the layout of the rooms to the way the family eats lunch. A new house may also bring sensory challenges. The sounds and smells of another familys home may feel overwhelming, especially if a sibling is loud or a dog barks at the door. Your child may also find the social side tiring. Many of the rules for being a guest are unwritten, like saying hello to the parents or asking before opening the fridge. Kids on the spectrum may need these rules spelled out, since they may not pick them up by watching. Preview the visit before it happens Talking through the visit ahead of time may make it feel more predictable. Correcting them feels like the obvious move but it's also usually what ends the conversation before it goes anywhere. Learn how you can stay in that conversation instead of shutting it down by validating what your teen is feeling, while at the same time, without agreeing with what they're claiming. What validation actually means Validation doesn't mean agreeing with everything your teen says. It means acknowledging the emotion underneath their words is true for them, and showing them you understand why they might feel that way, even when the facts don't quite match their interpretation. You can do both at once, take the feeling seriously and disagree with the conclusion. How to separate the feeling from the claim Validation works by pulling the emotion apart from the factual claim. When your teen says my teacher hates me or no one wants to hang out with me anymore, you're looking at a big statement that probably isn't entirely accurate. Your instinct is to correct it directly, saying things like, That's not true, Your friends were just here, or People like you. Underneath your teens statement, though, is usually a difficult feeling theyre encountering, such as loneliness, feeling singled out, or feeling rejected. You can validate that feeling without endo... * [Mindful Parenting: Why Bother?](https://www.rosscenter.com/blog/mindful-parenting-why-bother/) - Published: Sep 27, 2026> **Article Content:** By Heather Bernstein, PsyD Paying attention, letting go, and approaching moments with curiosity all seem simple. Conceptually, mindfulness seems easy and you may be asking yourself, what is the point? Why bother attending to my experiences? How will things be different if pay attention to my thoughts? Will this help? Will I become a better parent if I do this? Becoming More Aware Awareness is a key component in behavior change. Before we can take steps towards making changes in our lives, we need to know that something is a problem. Additionally, we must be aware of the internal and external factors that maintain a particular problem behavior. Therefore, mindfulness is a key ingredient in change. Your thoughts, emotions, physical reactions, and urges are highly valuable pieces of information. Increased awareness leads to more choices in how you respond. Mindfulness improves your ability to step out of autopilot, or a pre-programmed pattern of responding, and instead respond in a way that is more consistent with your goals. The Benefits of Mindfulness for Parents Research suggests that mindfulness can reduce parenting stress, improve emotion regulation, cognitive flexibility, and problem-solving abilities. Furthermore, when parents model mindfulness skills, their children learn to apply these skills in their own life. A mindfulness practice does require commitment, intention, and consistency. With mindfulness comes more awareness, control, and opportunity. While the eviden... * [When Your Young Adult Child Is Having Trouble Finding Their Footing](https://www.rosscenter.com/blog/when-your-young-adult-child-is-having-trouble-finding-their-footing/) - Published: Sep 24, 2026> **Article Content:** By Maria Ashford For all parents, watching a child move toward adulthood brings new questions, concerns, and challenges. How much support should you still provide? When should you step in, and when should you step back? What is reasonable to expect at this age? For parents whose children are struggling to move forward, however, these questions can feel much more urgent. While peers may be leaving home, attending college, finding work, building relationships, and taking on more responsibility, your own child may seem stuck. They may be avoiding school or work, withdrawing socially, struggling with everyday responsibilities, or continuing to rely heavily on you in ways you did not expect at this stage. These concerns may begin during the later teen years and become more pronounced as expectations for independence increase. Parents often try encouraging, reminding, problem-solving, finding treatment, adjusting expectations, or stepping in when things fall apart, without feeling that their efforts have had much impact. The result can be a painful sense of being stuck alongside your child: concerned about where things are heading, but uncertain about what you can realistically do to help. What Is Typical in the Transition to Adulthood? There is no single right timeline for becoming an adult. Young people vary tremendously in when they leave home, become financially independent, settle into a career, develop long-term relationships, or feel confident managing adult responsibilities... * [When Should Kids With ADHD Exercise to Help Focus and Anxiety](https://www.rosscenter.com/blog/when-should-kids-with-adhd-exercise-to-help-focus-and-anxiety/) - Published: Sep 24, 2026> **Article Content:** By Heather Bernstein, PsyD It's 4:30 on a school night. Your child has been holding it together since the first bell, and the math worksheet in front of them might as well be a wall. You could push through it the way you have before, and you already know how that usually ends. There's a counterintuitive move that tends to work better and its as simple as sending them outside for ten minutes first. Parents of children with ADHD often ask us when kids should exercise to help with focus and anxiety, and the honest answer is that timing changes the outcome more than most families realize. The same thirty minutes of movement does different work depending on where it lands in the day. This article covers the timing that produces the clearest gains, why movement helps an ADHD brain in the first place, and how to build the habit without turning it into one more nightly battle. The window right after movement is when focus improves most Physical activity produces a short-lived sharpening of the exact abilities ADHD makes harder, attention, working memory, and impulse control. That effect is strongest in the stretch right after movement, then fades over the next hour or two. That makes exercise something you can actually aim at a specific moment in your child's day. Aim it at whatever's hardest for them. Five to ten minutes of real movement right before homework, a project, or sitting through dinner is often enough. Jumping jacks in the driveway, a quick game of catch, dancing through... * [Mindful Parenting: Beginner’s Mind](https://www.rosscenter.com/blog/mindful-parenting-beginner-s-mind/) - Published: Sep 20, 2026> **Article Content:** By Heather Bernstein, PsyD There are thousands of parenting books on the market; however, there is no manual about how to parent. Furthermore, there is no specific manual on how to parent your specific child, in your specific life, at this specific time. Even though there is no right or wrong way to parent, many parents still find plenty of opportunities to judge themselves and their children. These judgements are not inherently negative, and they can contribute to stress in parenting. The judgements can be sneaky, and you may not even be aware they are occurring. For example: my child should listen to me my child should know better I shouldnt have to repeat myself I should be able to do this. There is a distinction between what you may want and what is reality. Closely tied to acceptance is the concept of Beginners Mind. Develop an Open Mind Beginners mind is the process of letting go of preconceived notions and allowing yourself to see things with an open mind, and as if you are seeing something for the first time. Beginners mind is about cultivating curiosity when you approach everyday situations, not only when you are learning something new. As a beginner there is value in being open minded and allowing opportunities for trial and error. This allows you to learn and approach the task in front of you effectively. As we gain exposure and experience, we tend to drop our exploratory attitude and replace it with a fixed mindset that is not always open to new information... * [Mindful Parenting: Acceptance](https://www.rosscenter.com/blog/mindful-parenting-acceptance/) - Published: Sep 13, 2026> **Article Content:** By Heather Bernstein, PsyD The urge for things to be different is quite pervasive in the process of parenting. I wish I had more time. I wish I reacted differently. I shouldnt have yelled. I shouldnt get upset about such small things. I should be able to do it all. I should enjoy this. The desire for things to be different is natural and understandable. We all have expectations about how things are supposed to be. Sometimes these hopes motivate us and help us step towards our goals. However, when we continually push back against the reality that is in front of us it is easy to feel frustrated, defeated, and ineffective. In Part 1 of this series, we explored how mindful parenting helps us become more aware of our thoughts, emotions, and physical responses. This awareness creates an important first step: the ability to pause. Learning to become more accepting is another important element of Mindful Parenting. The Challenge of Acceptance in Parenting Accepting reality without judging it, fighting it, or pushing it away is an extremely difficult task. Acceptance requires you to maintain awareness of the present moment, understand your reactions, and allow experiences to come and go. Acceptance does not require you to approve of what is happening. It makes sense to feel angry when your child does not listen to you. It makes sense to feel sad when you learn your child has a diagnosis you were not expecting. By now, a lot of parents may feel like they're running two full-time jobs at once. One is the job that actually pays them, and the other is orchestrating school forms, sports schedules, supply lists, and the dozen small logistics that no one else in the house seems to track. This can lead to you snapping at your partner more over something minor, lying awake running through tomorrow's to-do list, or feeling like you can't fully exhale until September settles down. Sometimes, though, that ordinary seasonal stress crosses into something a psychiatrist would actually call clinically significant anxiety, and understanding what that shift actually looks like can help you tell the difference. Signs Your Stress Might Be More Than Seasonal Here are some signs that show that your stress might be more permanent rather than seasonal. Finding yourself still unable to get a full night's sleep, even weeks after your new routine has settled in, lying awake or waking at 3am with your mind already racing Noticing physical signs of stress that weren't part of your life before, like a tight chest, an unsettled stomach most days, or tension headaches Getting irritated more easily than usual, snapping at people who don't deserve it, and realizing it's happening without quite being able to catch yourself in the moment Feeling unable to concentrate at work because part of your attention is always somewhere else D... * [Mindful Parenting 101 – Becoming More Present](https://www.rosscenter.com/blog/mindful-parenting-101-becoming-more-present/) - Published: Sep 06, 2026> **Article Content:** By Heather Bernstein, PsyD We all know that parenting is a full-time job that requires significant attention, emotion regulation, and patience. Many parents describe feeling burned out, overwhelmed, overscheduled, and distracted. Parenting can be stressful and demanding, yet most of us push through the chronic stress to show up and meet our parenting responsibilities the best we can. Its easy to parent on autopilot. You may find yourself reacting before you've had a chance to think, rushing from one task to the next, or feeling disconnected from the present moment. Mindful parenting offers an alternative This 4-part mindful parenting series explores how attending to thoughts, emotions, urges, behaviors, and physiological cues can help ease the stress of parenting, and allow you to show up for yourself and your family in a more effective way. What is Mindful Parenting? There are a lot of preconceived notions about what mindfulness is and what is required to be mindful. A common belief is that mindfulness requires you to be calm, still, and peaceful. The image of a mindful person often conjures up a person sitting alone, with a smile on their face, in a serene place. When you are in the trenches of parenting these adjectives and this image can feel impossible. The reality is that mindfulness does not require any of these things. Mindfulness is about the ability to be in the present moment with awareness to whatever is happening, the good, the bad, and the ugly. But I think we often start with the wrong question. Most of that worry does not actually come from doing too little. It comes from carrying an enormous amount of work that often does not get recognized as work at all. And that is exactly where I want to start. Managing Mental Load vs Physical Load The conception-planning-execution model, or in simpler terms, the mental load, explains why household labor causes so much friction between partners and within families. Take planning a family trip as an example. Booking the flights is one task. Figuring out dates that work for everyone, researching where to stay, and remembering the one thing your child cannot sleep without is a much bigger, mostly invisible job, and it often falls to one person by default.More often than not, burnout can start to creep in for the parent carrying that invisible job. It is not necessarily because they are doing more physical tasks, but because they are the one keeping track of everything that needs to happen, what comes next, and what might get forgotten. That work stays in their head all day, even during the parts of the day that are supposed to feel like a break. Some parents will also ask me, what if we share the household chores with family members to help lighten the load and prevent burnout? Sometimes even when you tell a partner or an old... * [ADHD Time Management: Overcoming Procrastination and Taking Control](https://www.rosscenter.com/blog/adhd-time-management/) - Published: Aug 15, 2026> **Article Content:** by Grace Berman, LCSW and Carey Werley, LCSW Managing time effectively can be a challenge for anyone, but for individuals with ADHD, it can often feel like an uphill battle. ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, can often present challenges when it comes to time management and procrastination. These challenges with procrastination can be exacerbated by co-occurring challenges with anxiety, as we know that the cycle of avoidance can reinforce procrastination habits. The constant stream of thoughts, the difficulty in focusing, and the impulsivity associated with ADHD can make staying on top of tasks and deadlines a bit more difficult. But don't worry, you're not alone! With the right strategies and support, you can effectively over come ADHD time management and conquer procrastination. Furthermore, if you are the parent or loved one of someone with ADHD, this can be challenging as well. You can be an important source of support if you can recognize that the symptoms of ADHD are real and also treatable. A child may ask repeated questions about their teacher, schedule, classmates, or whether they will be able to handle the workload. A teenager may suddenly experience stomachaches, have trouble sleeping, or say that they do not feel ready to go back. When a child is anxious, a parents instinct is often to try to make the anxiety go away. Parents may reassure them, help them avoid uncomfortable situations, answer the same question repeatedly, or remove expectations that seem overwhelming. These responses are understandable and often provide immediate relief. The problem is that what reduces anxiety in the short term can sometimes strengthen it in the long term. How Avoidance Reinforces Anxiety Anxiety often tells us that something uncomfortable is also dangerous. Avoidance can unintentionally confirm that message. For example, an anxious teenager may say they cannot attend orientation because they are worried they will not know anyone. Allowing them to skip it may reduce their distress that afternoon, but it can also reinforce the belief that social discomfort is something they cannot tolerate. The same pattern can show up in other ways. A parent might contact a teacher on their childs behalf, allow them to stay home when anxiety causes physical discomfort, or repeatedly reassure them... * [Managing Anger in Teens: What Actually Helps](https://www.rosscenter.com/blog/managing-anger-in-teens-what-actually-helps/) - Published: Aug 11, 2026> **Article Content:** By Maura Roll, LPC, CSAC Parents ask me a version of this question often: Is my teens anger normal, or is it something to be concerned about? Managing anger in teens starts with answering that question honestly, and the answer is that both things are often true. Emotional intensity is a normal part of adolescent development, yet some can be an indication that a teen needs more support than a parent can provide alone. It can be helpful to differentiate typical from atypical anger. This is important as a parent navigates what actually helps either way. What Causes Anger in Teens Adolescent brain development explains why teens express such intense anger. The limbic system, which drives emotion, develops early in life. The prefrontal cortex, responsible for logic, planning, and impulse control, finishes developing much later, for many not until their mid-twenties. Keep that thought for a moment. In short, a teenagers brain is wired to express intense emotions long before its capacity for logic and impulse control. Dr. Dan Siegels Flipped Lid hand model of the brain is a useful way to picture this dynamic. Your palm, the brain stem, handles basic survival functions. Your thumb, tucked up in your palm, represents the amygdala, which triggers fight, flight, or freeze responses. Your fingers, the prefrontal cortex, are curled over the top, regulating logic, planning and impulse control. When a teenager experiences intense stress, their fingers pop open. The prefrontal cortex lo... * [Beyond Medication: A Complementary Approach to Psychiatry](https://www.rosscenter.com/blog/beyond-medication-a-complementary-approach-to-psychiatry/) - Published: Jul 30, 2026> **Article Content:** Written By: Rajkaran Sachdej, MD Psychiatric treatment may include medication, but it should never be reduced to a prescription. The strongest treatment plans begin with understanding the person sitting across from you: their symptoms, medical history, relationships, culture, values, and goals. At The Ross Center, our psychiatrists take time to understand these different dimensions of a patients life. This broader perspective helps us develop recommendations that are evidence-based, practical, and personalized. Understanding the Whole Person Peoples experiences of mental health and healing are shaped by their families, communities, identities, cultural traditions, spiritual beliefs, and life experiences. These influences often intersect, affecting how someone understands emotional distress, seeks support, and approaches treatments such as medication or psychotherapy. Practicing with cultural humility means approaching these conversations with curiosity rather than assumptions. A psychiatrist may ask what has helped in the past, whether cultural or spiritual practices are important to the patient, and what concerns they may have about medication or therapy. These conversations provide a more complete understanding of the patient and help ensure that treatment reflects what matters most to them. Where Complementary Approaches May Fit Many people already use practices outside of traditional psychiatric treatment to support their well-being. Research consistently shows that LGBTQ+ populations experience higher rates of anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, and other mental health concerns compared with the general population. LGBTQ+ individuals may face stressors such as: Fear of rejection or discrimination Bullying, harassment, or exclusion Family or relationship challenges Concerns about safety or acceptance Workplace or community stress Internalized stigma or shame Navigating identity development or coming out Over time, these experiences can contribute to anxiety, depression, isolation, trauma-related symptoms, or other forms of emotional distress.
