Dr. Ramia Gupta is a board certified general and forensic psychiatrist. When addressing forensic cases, she draws on her vast experience to provide expert witness testimony and forensic expertise in both civil and criminal matters. She also treats adults suffering from depression, anxiety, stress, and other mental health conditions. Compassionate and genuine, Dr. Gupta conducts detailed diagnostic evaluations in order to devise an individualized and comprehensive treatment plan unique to the needs of each patient. She approaches each patient as a whole person, taking into consideration the biological, psychological, emotional, and social factors which interfere in our lives and cause us turmoil. When discussing medication, she carefully explains the options and potential side effects so decisions can be made collaboratively that meet the patient’s goals. Patients feel supported and understood, and she values a combination of psychotherapy and medication to increase self-awareness and enhance personal and professional growth.
Areas of Expertise:
Dr. Gupta has a wealth of experience in forensic psychiatry. She has been qualified as an expert witness and has provided testimony on a variety of issues. Dr. Gupta has expertise in both civil and criminal forensic matters including independent medical exams, wrongful termination, emotional distress and sexual harassment cases, fitness for duty evaluations, medical decision-making capacity decisions, civil commitment and competency to stand trial, among others. When treating individual patients, she specializes in anxiety and mood disorders, relationship and work conflicts, anger management, family, and parenting issues, and general psychiatric consultations. An outstanding listener, she helps patients understand their symptoms and medication options, and walks them through every step of treatment with compassion.
Experience and Training:
In 2016, Dr. Gupta was appointed by the Chief Judge of DC Superior Court to The Commission on Mental Health in Washington DC. This judicial panel makes recommendations of civil commitment and dangerousness to DC Superior Court. Dr. Gupta completed her Psychiatry Residency Training at Saint Elizabeths Hospital, Washington D.C., where she was also Chief Resident. She completed her Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship at Georgetown University Hospital, Washington D.C. and a Psychoanalytic Fellowship at the Baltimore Washington Center for Psychoanalysis. Additionally she is on faculty at Saint Elizabeths Psychiatry Residency and Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship programs and also teaches a forensic psychiatry seminar at George Washington University School of Medicine Psychiatry Residency program, where she is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry. She is also a member of both the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Psychiatry and Law.
