Practice Philosophy:

Dr. Roya Khanali provides therapy to adults who are struggling with anxiety, depression, self-esteem, body image, and relationship challenges. Couples also benefit from therapy as they gain the skills to increase emotional intimacy and enhance connection. Compassionate and thoughtful, Dr. Khanali is easy to talk to and makes clients feel comfortable as they share their emotional lives. Using her natural empathy and warmth, Dr. Khanali personalizes treatment by identifying the situational, environmental and cultural components that are contributing to present difficulties. Clients gain an understanding of the impact of their belief systems on emotions and behaviors, particularly during times of transition, and acquire the coping skills to manage stressful experiences. She helps her clients change their narrative, strengthen self-confidence, and minimize the effect of anxiety on sleep, spiraling thoughts, and self-destructive behaviors.  As clients learn to recognize their own negative self-talk and the protective mechanisms that are holding them back, they develop more compassionate ways to think about themselves and are able to make proactive changes in their lives.

Areas of Expertise:

Dr. Khanali specializes in treating anxiety, depression, and relationship challenges. She draws from her expertise in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and short-term psychoanalysis in customizing treatment for each client. Using concepts from DBT she works with individuals struggling with eating disorders, personality disorders, and self-destructive behaviors, teaching them to regulate emotions more effectively. Clients develop problem solving skills to better manage their own emotions, behaviors, and impulsive tendencies. She also treats clients with a history of trauma, addressing attachment issues that stem from childhood and the impact of traumatic experiences on current relationships and self-identity.

Experience and Training:

Dr. Khanali received her doctorate in clinical psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Washington, DC. She has experience treating patients in multiple settings, including private clinics, hospitals, and in the court system. She has received additional training in CBT, DBT, and psychodynamic therapies. Dr. Khanali has extensive experience working with culturally diverse clients, and is sensitive to the impact of immigration, family expectations, and cultural competency on mood and anxiety.
