Practice Philosophy:
Dr. Cheng Su is a board certified adult psychiatrist with a background in primary care. Personable and empathetic, his goal is to provide customized treatments that are tailored to each patient’s needs. He strives to empower his patients with skills and self-understanding to achieve maximum results. Dr. Su takes a multi-faceted approach to each patient’s dynamic psychosocial life, and his care plan includes a keen understanding of potential underlying medical conditions. When prescribing medications, he also offers guidance for life style changes and therapy to ensure long lasting improvement. He takes the time to get to know each patient and explains his diagnoses and treatment plans to demystify psychiatry, so that each patient has more control over their own progress.
Areas of Expertise:
Dr. Su specializes in the evaluation and treatment of depression, bipolar mood disorder, anxiety, ADHD, and PTSD, and has expertise in exploring gender health and LGBTQ+ issues along with consultations for gender affirming surgery. A specialist in psychopharmacology, he takes into consideration the side effects and potential interactions with other medications when prescribing. He is passionate about getting his patients the best treatment options when traditional treatment is inadequate. The diagnoses and care plans are part of a holistic approach that includes therapy components from CBT, DBT, and ERP to facilitate change. With a special interest in ADHD, he also offers executive function training and insight into the complex overlapping symptoms between ADHD, addiction, anxiety, and depression.
Experience and Training:
A military veteran with 10 years of experience as an Air Force physician, Dr. Su brings a breadth of experience in both primary care and psychiatry to his practice. His diverse background includes practicing medicine throughout Asia, and working at military, VA, and civilian hospitals in LA and New York. With his own cultural background, Dr. Su has a deep appreciation of the minority stress and the intersectionality that many of his patients face. He received his medical degree from Des Moines University, and completed internships at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital and the US Air Force Aerospace Medicine program. His psychiatric residency was completed at UCLA, and he is currently pursuing fellowship training in Addiction Psychiatry at NYU Langone Health/Bellevue Hospital. Dr. Su also trained in specialized clinics that provide mental health care in substance use, trauma, and gender health. He was selected as a Diversity Leadership Fellow by the American Psychiatric Association, and is a recipient of both the Medical Education and Research Foundation scholarship and Air Force Health Profession Scholarship.
