Thomas Shaver, MD, is an insightful, empathetic, compassionate board-certified adult psychiatrist who provides top quality treatments for adults with mood disorders, including depression, anxiety, OCD and PTSD. He incorporates psychopharmacology, therapy and integrative medical approaches to heal the whole person. Engaging and personable, Dr. Shaver is an observant, calm and thoughtful physician who is passionately committed to maximizing the well-being of every patient, customizing care to their unique needs.
Areas of Expertise:
Dr. Shaver has expertise in diagnosing and treating mood and anxiety disorders, always taking into account a patient’s biological, psychological and social background. His extensive experience in business, law and the military facilitate rapid understanding of each patient’s situation. Dr. Shaver is comfortable helping patients manage life transitions and challenges, including issues related to a career, relationships, parenting, and health. He has a special affinity for veterans and their families, providing constructive solutions for individuals who have suffered physical, emotional, or military-related trauma.
Experience and Training:
Dr. Shaver has considerable experience treating patients from all backgrounds, including the least fortunate, in inpatient and outpatient settings. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history with distinction from Stanford University, and has had a variety of careers, including service as a Marine, as well as work in the Venture Capital industry and for Nature Magazine. Dr. Shaver is very respectful of cultural differences after years spent living overseas in Egypt, London and Japan. After retiring from the Marine Corps, he obtained his M.D. from George Washington University including an emphasis on health policy. Dr. Shaver completed his psychiatry residency at George Washington University, followed by a fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry at Saint Elizabeths Hospital. He enjoys listening to jazz and Frank Sinatra, crafting exquisite soufflés and partaking of the myriad benefits of volcanically heated hot springs.
