Children Ages 2-22
With over 25 years of experience as a school psychologist, behavior consultant, and behavior therapist, Dr. Teri Brooks uses a practical, potent, and proven behavior therapy approach to foster success in children. Behavior therapy is skills-oriented and problem-focused, making it a highly effective and efficient form of treatment. Engaging and supportive, Dr. Brooks customizes a behavioral treatment plan that is family-centered, empowering of parents, and appropriate for children from toddlers through teens. Dr. Brooks works closely with parents to implement interventions that inspire children to make positive behavior choices, providing solutions for a wide variety of emotional, behavioral, and developmental challenges. Parents are taught concrete strategies that build important coping skills in their children, encourage their child’s strengths, and discourage problem behaviors. Families leave each session with a specific plan of action, whether that involves a different way of parenting or a homework plan so they can practice the strategies they learned in therapy. Successful treatment results in lasting behavior change and a happier family life.
Areas of Expertise:
Dr. Brooks is well known for her experience and efficacy treating a wide variety of diagnoses including ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Specific Phobias, and School Refusal. Treatment with Dr. Brooks can significantly improve behavioral challenges ranging from bed-time issues and toileting problems to tantrums, refusals and aggression. She helps to develop a constructive parenting system that will be most useful for each family, incorporating reward systems, discipline strategies, skills-teaching and skills-prompting, and methods to minimize triggers for negative behaviors. Dr. Brooks often works with parents without children present, but can also design sessions for both so that children can learn explicit skills to better manage their emotions, interact socially, or face their fears. She may also conduct on-site visits at home or school to fully understand the circumstances that are influencing negative behaviors. Dr. Brooks is particularly skilled at working with school teams to develop behavior support plans that impact a child’s progress. Additionally, when there are problematic family dynamics she offers family therapy to help resolve those issues.
