Practice Philosophy

Dr. Erica Vien is a licensed clinical psychologist who uses a client-centered, systemic, and humanistic approach to treatment while highlighting cognitive-behavioral, emotional, and relational aspects. She creates a sense of safety and trust, so that each patient is comfortable exploring and working through their own  unique story. Dr. Vien uses her positive energy, sense of humor, compassion, and warmth in developing positive relationship with children and teens so that they can gain stability and self-confidence.

Areas of Expertise

Dr. Vien specializes in working with school-aged children and adolescents who experience anxiety, adjustment related challenges (e.g., new school, new routine, changes in family dynamics, etc.), symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), behavioral concerns, depression, social skills deficits, and trauma. Dr. Vien uses a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and play therapy approaches when working with children and adolescents. For therapy to be effective, Dr. Vien strongly believes in speaking the child/adolescent’s language. Recognizing the child/adolescent’s cognitive and developmental stages, sometimes the child/adolescent may not have the ability to effectively articulate their strong emotions and thoughts. Through play and other forms of expressive mediums (e.g., art, drawing, writing, etc.), Dr. Vien believes that a child/adolescent may find it easier and more natural to share their story and work through their  concerns. In addition to using CBT and play therapy approaches, Dr. Vien incorporates attachment theories, emotional, and relational work in her treatment with children and adolescents. To ensure the coordination of patient care, Dr. Vien values working as a team with parents, guardians, school, and other key players in the child’s life. Dr. Vien emphasizes including the community and its resources because “it takes a village to raise a child!”
