Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder: An Introduction to Treatment

Program Description:

Patients diagnosed with functional or somatic disorders often feel unsupported and misunderstood. Psychotherapy not only provides support through a difficult journey but is also found to reduce physical symptoms as well. This intermediate training introduces ways to build rapport with these types of patients as well as treat their symptoms. Evidence-based treatments and specific techniques to use in session are shared. Homestudy options are available if participants are unable to attend the live event.

Clinical Objectives:

At the close of this presentation, attendees should be able to:

  • List at least three different medically unexplained illnesses.
  • Differentiate between different somatic symptom disorders.
  • List and describe at least three different treatment plan goals for patients with chronic physical symptoms.
  • Explain at least two different treatment modalities to address somatic concerns.

CE Information

  • 2 CE Contact Hours: For Psychologists in all states, Social Workers in New York, Virginia, and Washington, DC, and CHES professionals. Many licensing boards accept CE from APA approved sponsors as well as for trainings approved by boards in other jurisdictions. Danielle Mizell, PsyD, is a pediatric psychologist who enjoys working with children, adolescents, and young adults, providing therapy and assessments at Southeast Psych Nashville. She has received training from multiple children's hospitals in the country including the Children's Hospital of Michigan and Cleveland Clinic Children's. In her practice, Dr. Mizell specializes in anxiety, OCD, and chronic medical concerns. She also provides psychoeducational assessments to evaluate for ADHD and other learning disorders. She is the Director of Clinical Training at Southeast Psych Nasvhille and the Assistant Director of Professional Development for ARC Health.
