Addressing School Refusal: The SPACE Approach

Child refusing to get up and go to school

Location:

Webinar via Zoom

Intended for:

Mental Health Professionals

Date / Time:

September 12, 2025. 10:00am – 11:30am ET.

Program Description:

This beginner-level, virtual training provides an introduction to the use of SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) principles when working with the parents of a child struggling with school refusal. Led by Amy Killy, LCSW, a Certified SPACE therapist, you learn how to effectively address school refusal using SPACE. School refusal typically stems from anxiety related to academic performance, social challenges, or emotional difficulties, creating a self-perpetuating cycle that can severely impact educational outcomes.

This training equips psychotherapists and other mental health professionals with practical SPACE strategies to help parents maintain a non-anxious presence, support their anxious children, and move beyond confrontational approaches. Participants learn how to guide families toward reengaging students with school while creating a more peaceful household. No prior knowledge or training in SPACE is required to benefit from this training.

Clinical Objectives:

At the close of this presentation, attendees should be able to:

  • Explain basics of SPACE treatment

  • Identify common misconceptions about school refusal

  • Identify impact of school refusal

  • Describe role of parents in treatment of school refusal

  • Describe 6 steps for parents to address school refusal
