About the Session
Through interactive lecture, exercises, activities, and small group work, this intermediate-level workshop is designed to help mental health practitioners working with children and adolescents to address biases and attitudes that undermine therapeutic safety, increase provider knowledge of gender minorities, and discuss the clinical issues facing transgender and non-binary clients. Both clinical and administrative considerations will be presented to ensure that clinical practices are ethical, affirming, and inclusive from start to finish. Participants will leave with clinical competencies to better meet the growing and evolving demands of this population.
Learning Objectives
- Explore your own stereotypes, myths, and experiences in a safe, non-judgmental learning environment and use this to inform your work with children and adolescents who are transgender or non-binary.
- Learn foundations and language of understanding gender for working with children and adolescents.
- Describe and appreciate the unique needs of children and adolescents who are transgender or non-binary.
- Acquire some clinical and administrative guidance to create a safe, therapeutic environment for and to address the needs of gender minorities.
- Develop diagnostic criteria for assessing gender dysphoria when working with children and adolescents who are transgender or non-binary.
Instructor Credentials
Sean Lare is a licensed clinical social worker who is passionate about serving the transgender and gender diverse community by providing psychotherapy, leading advocacy work, and educating others on the varied experiences of this community. Through his consultation work, he has presented about working with LGB and Transgender clients, students, and employees at regional and local conferences, provided trainings to schools, behavioral health organizations, hospitals, and employers, and participated in numerous panel discussions and guest lecture presentations in undergraduate- and graduate-level classes. Mr. Lare has been invited to contribute to several community and policy planning meetings and has participated in advocacy efforts to increase services and rights for and to meet the diverse needs of transgender people. The focus of his psychotherapy practice in Columbia, MD is working with children, teens, and adults who are transgender or gender diverse and their families and providing supervision and consultation to other providers.
