Program Description:
The relationship between women’s hormonal and mental health is a complex one, and has long been avoided by the medical establishment and under-represented in clinical research. This intermediate level presentation provides an overview of the most prevalent psychiatric disorders that arise at times of major hormonal transition: menarche and menstruation, pregnancy, the postpartum period, and menopause.
Our discussion of the physiology of these disorders and appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment options is geared towards an audience of both physicians and non-medically trained mental health professionals.
In this presentation, we focus on patients/clients who experience female hormonal changes and reproductive processes such as menstruation, pregnancy and menopause, acknowledging that not all of these individuals identify as women and not all people who identify as women experience these physiologic processes.
Clinical Objectives:
- Participants will be able to identify the basic hormonal processes in menstruation, pregnancy and menopause
-
Participants will be able to describe the relationship between these hormonal changes and associated psychiatric conditions and symptoms.
-
Participants will be able to discuss treatment options for hormone-related psychiatric sx tand syndromes.
