Practice Philosophy:

Dr. Deepika Tanwar is a board certified child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist who believes that every human is much more than a laundry list of symptoms. She takes the time to get to know each patient, answering questions about medication and treatment, and focusing on the struggles that are interfering with their ability to live the life they want. Kind, calm, and laid-back, she offers holistic treatment that also encompasses sleep, nutrition, and healthy living to influence overall wellness. She helps patients to develop greater insights as together they develop realistic goals and expectations for treatment.  Parents are an integral part of treatment with children, and Dr. Tanwar stays closely connected with parents to gain their perspective, keep them informed on treatment plans, and involve them in medication decisions. She also works within a child’s overall system, at times consulting with pediatricians, family, and school personnel.  Medication is prescribed when appropriate, and she makes sure that patients understand the purpose and potential impact of any prescription.

Areas of Expertise:

Dr. Tanwar specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of anxiety, depression, mood disorders, trauma, selective mutism, gender identity, and ADHD. With expertise in psychopharmacology, she considers an individual’s own biology and symptoms when determining the appropriate medication with the fewest potential side effects. Treatment often includes a supportive therapeutic component, drawing from evidence-based approaches including cognitive behavior therapy, psychodynamic therapy, DBT-based principles, and play therapy for children. She works with college-age & young adults, helping them to dealing with transitions in life. As a South Asian professional, she is sensitive to cultural expectations and  empathizes with patients who struggle with achievement, anxiety, and stigmas against mental health treatment.  She hopes to provide patients with enough skills to deal with bumps in the road along the way, and empower them with the resources to successfully manage their own journey.

Experience and Training:

Dr. Tanwar received her medical degree from St. George’s University and completed her residency at Harlem Hospital in New York where she was chief resident. She gained valuable experience working with children and teens during her fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC. Dr. Tanwar also completed an MBA with an emphasis on health care management at St. George’s, and used her medical and business knowledge to serve as a learning strategist to aid medical students in Grenada. She takes advantage of continuing education opportunities to continue to offer cutting edge psychiatry using the most of up to date research findings.
