Location:

On-Demand Webinar

Intended for:

Mental health professionals, parents, and educators

Date / Time:

Webinar Recorded 5/24/24 – 3 hours

Program Description:

The rapid development of media technology has created numerous challenges for psychologists, policymakers, parents, and educators. In this intermediate level training, we discuss the use of interactive media, including social media and video games, and how screen use impacts individuals of all ages. This training is designed to help mental health professionals and caregivers apply psychological principles to create more effective interventions for clients and family members.

We identify the multi-faceted outcomes of interactive technology, including the impact on human behavior, emotions, and cognition. Participants will learn to think more critically about their clients’, their children’s, and their own relationships with interactive media. By understanding the basic psychological principles underlying media use, providers and caregivers will more readily be able to identify when problematic use is occurring and create targeted interventions.

Clinical Objectives:

  • Describe 5 basic mechanics used by interactive media to maintain engagement and relate them to problematic play.
  • Apply psychological principles (such as attention, perception, and need for social relation) to conceptualize the impact of interactive media on human behavior, emotions, and cognition, and recognize how these may present in a clinical context and impact mental health.
  • Analyze current research on the intersection of psychology and interactive media and identify gaps in the current literature to better understand the recommended clinical practices
