Practice Philosophy:
Dr. Alison Haar is a child and adolescent psychologist who effectively treats children as well as adults. Naturally optimistic and enthusiastic, she helps patients overcome their challenges using a warm, supportive approach to care. Children and adolescents respond particularly well to her light hearted, joyful treatment style, and she uses age-appropriate techniques to help young people reduce the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders. She is keenly aware that managing a child’s problems must extend to parent management training and collateral family work, and regularly incorporates parents and family members into treatment. She also offers parent consultations. She is trained to deliver SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) treatment to parents of anxious children. SPACE is a novel parent-based treatment, developed at Yale by psychiatrist Dr. Eli Lebowitz, that teaches parents the skills to address their child’s anxiety symptoms. Adult patients find her engaging and relatable. With a holistic approach to wellness, her patients gain the skills they need to live happier, healthier lives.
Areas of Expertise:
Dr. Haar works with both children and adults, and has completed extensive training in child psychology. She specializes in using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), including exposure and response prevention therapy (ERP), trauma-focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT), relaxation training, and play therapy (with children). She successfully treats children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and behavioral problems. Dr. Haar has expertise in treating patients of all ages, adults and children, who suffer from trauma, phobias, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and mood disorders, as well as adults experiencing relationship or interpersonal issues.
Experience and Training:
Dr. Haar received her PsyD in School and Clinical Child Psychology from Pace University and is a New York state licensed psychologist. She received specialized training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) from the prestigious Beck Institute and also has advanced training in trauma-focused CBT. Prior to joining The Ross Center, Dr. Haar spent many years working in child welfare in both New Jersey and New York. She is enthusiastic about using her training and clinical experience to improve the mental health of her patients.
Dr. Haar has completed continuing education requirements that meet the initiatives of The Ross Center’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force.
