Practice Philosophy:
Dr. Kshamta Joshi is a child, adolescent, adult, and forensic Psychiatrist who makes patients of all ages feel comfortable and appreciated. She applies her extensive medical training and personal warmth and empathy in assessing and diagnosing a variety of mental health conditions. Direct, honest, and forthcoming, Dr. Joshi explains medical lingo in plain and simple language to help patients understand the mind-body connection. She advocates and encourages patients to try psychotherapy and believes in prescribing medication only if absolutely indicated. Dr. Joshi takes the time to discuss at length her assessment, diagnosis, and various treatment options so that patients and parents feel confident in making informed decisions. She effectively builds trust and rapport with adolescents and young adults, empowering them to be active participants in their own treatment, which leads to greater compliance and success. Parents are kept informed and provided with guidance on how best to support their children.
Areas of Expertise:
Dr. Joshi brings a vast skill-set in assessing, diagnosing, and treating a wide range of disorders, specializing in behavioral problems, social anxiety, panic attacks, excessive worry (generalized anxiety), selective mutism, depression, OCD, PTSD, and ADHD. She is also one of very few child forensic psychiatrists in the region, able to provide expert consultation, testimony and evaluation in civil and criminal cases. She uses her expertise to determine when medication would be beneficial, prescribing psychiatric medications with the greatest efficacy and fewest potential side effects. She helps patients understand that physical symptoms are often indicators of anxiety or mood disorders, and how to best treat the underlying disorder to minimize symptoms. Dr. Joshi is fluent in Hindi, and has an understanding of South Asian cultural experiences and parenting concerns.
Experience and Training:
Triple-board certified in child, adult, and forensic psychiatry, Dr. Joshi works primarily with children, adolescents, and young adults. She has also completed a fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry from Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Joshi completed her residency in Adult Psychiatry at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in New York and her Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (Elmhurst Hospital), New York, where she served as the Chief Fellow. In addition to her clinical work, she has experience in both inpatient and emergency room settings. She is currently on faculty at New York University (NYU) School of Medicine as a clinical assistant professor, where she supervises and teaches psychiatry residents, fellows, and medical students.
