Breon Gaines, MA, is a licensed professional counselor and an encouraging therapist who enjoys working with children, adolescents and adults. Warm and empathetic, Breon creates an environment where clients feel comfortable and safe in treatment. With young children, she employs play therapy to give children the opportunity to use age-appropriate toys, games, and art to communicate their feelings and experiences. Breon leads with the belief that we are all uniquely shaped by cultural, environmental, racial, and social factors, and develops personalized treatment plans to help each individual to live their best life. She teaches children and adults mindfulness techniques to practice centering, self-awareness, and self-compassion.

Areas of Expertise:

Breon works with children, adolescents, and adults who struggle with anxiety and depression. She also has significant experience supporting children with socio-emotional challenges and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). She offers therapy for adults navigating acculturation concerns, life transitions, low self-esteem, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships. Her treatment draws from elements of psychodynamic therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), play therapy, and mindfulness-based therapy. Her goal is to helps clients develop valuable insights and new coping skills to enhance relationships and improve functioning.

Experience and Training:

Breon received her Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from The George Washington University, and her BA from Spelman College.  She has received specialized training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and play therapy interventions. In addition, Breon has worked in various clinical settings, including the GW Student Counseling Center. She spent time in a school for children with special needs, interacting with families, developing IEPs, and treating children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and more complex emotional disabilities.
