Practice Philosophy:
Dr. Avy Stock is a licensed clinical psychologist treating children, adolescents, and adults through individual and family therapy as well as parent consultation. Warm, funny, and engaging, she creates a welcoming environment in which patients feel comfortable. She is known for developing excellent rapport with teens and young adult patients, forming strong bonds that encourage honesty and growth. Her goal is to foster independence while reducing anxiety and improving functioning in school, work, home, and relationships. When working with adolescents and teens, she offers practical advice and guidance while balancing the individual needs of the teen and the goals of the family. In therapy, she teaches her clients to become more sensitive to their own emotions, gaining a higher tolerance for distress and the confidence to take risks and live their best life.
Areas of Expertise:
Dr. Stock has extensive experience with patients who are struggling with anxiety, ADHD, behavioral problems, and mood disorders, as well as individuals are who facing difficulties in their relationships. She is skilled at helping patients who are coping with identity development and adjustment issues, particularly young adults who are having trouble with transitions, relationships, and general ‘adulting’ challenges. Her clients gain valuable life skills as they build self-confidence and gain independence. With advanced training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), she also treats individuals with more complex conditions including self-harm and suicidal ideation. Additionally, she administers comprehensive psychological and neuropsychological evaluations. When working with parents, she offers tailored strategies and guidance that improves relationships in the home and teaches parents how best to support their child. Dr. Stock values the importance of clinical consultation with schools and other service providers in offering patients and their families the most comprehensive treatment.
Experience and Training:
Dr. Stock received her Doctorate of Psychology in School-Clinical Child Psychology from Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology. She completed her APA-accredited internship at North Shore University Hospital, Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, in Manhasset, New York and her APPIC-accredited post-doctoral residency in Clinical Psychology at Falls Church Community Services Board in Springfield, Virginia. She has extensive training and work experience conducting individual, group, and family therapy with children and adolescents as well as administering comprehensive psychological and neuropsychological evaluations. She has completed post-graduate training in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) training. A member of the Anxiety and Depression Associates of America (ADAA), she was honored in 2016 with a rising Young Leadership award. She is licensed to practice in DC, MD, and VA, and is also licensed through the National Register of Health Service Psychologists.
Dr. Stock has completed continuing education requirements that meet the initiatives of The Ross Center’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force.
